The Primitive Kitchen

The kitchen is a wonderful place to decorate in a primitive style.  The smell of home baked pies and breads bring us back to a special time spent with family and friends.

Keepsake Lights Soybean Grubbies are all hand poured using 100% soybean wax blend, the highest quality uncut fragrance oils and lead free wicks.  All of their hand poured candles are highly scented, clean burning, and fragrant from beginning to the very end.

Grubby candles from Country Keepsakes will keep your kitchen scented with the delicious  scents of so many wonderful primitive fragrances.

We will start by bringing primitive colors into our kitchen.  Apple reds, yellows, greens and blues are a few colors we can work with to make our kitchen fit in with the tone of yesteryear. Whatever your favorite primitive color is, use it!

Take a hanging pot rack and hang primitive baskets from it. Use the theme of your kitchen and place items related to that theme on your pot rack. For instance, if your theme is apples, try hanging old apple peelers, corers, old apple baskets, or whatever apple related items you can find. If you want to keep with a general antique kitchen theme hang old egg beaters, flour sifters, rolling pins (tie with a piece of homespun around one of the handles), coffee grinders, cheese graters, pastry cutters, or an old coffee pot.

For window treatments try cutting valances into a triangle and then tie a piece of homespun fabric, raffia, or whatever matches your decor about two thirds of the way down. This looks very cute and primitive!

Keep in mind the colors you're using and try to incorporate these into everything in the room.

Make canisters out of old pickle jars and tie coordinating strips of fabric around the necks. Paint the lids to match your color scheme and then take a nail and scratch off some of the paint to make it look old.

Hang a dish towel over the handle on your stove and then tie a piece of jute or raffia around it just below the handle to hold in place.  Simple!

If you buy white or off white hand towels you can stamp or stencil your theme right on them! There are a variety of stamps and stencils out there in a primitive theme so check your local craft stores.

Your stove can also make a primitive statement as well.  Place a large cast iron kettle on one of the back burners to bring your kitchen back in time. You can find old kettles at antique shops, estate sales, thrift shops and sometimes even at yard sales. I also like to use a tart burner on my stove and burn tarts that have the smell of home baked goodies!

Rag rugs are great on the floor as well as braided rugs. These rugs, however, don't like to stay in place, so be sure to use rug tape on the backs of these!

Another great idea is to hang an old feed scale from the ceiling in the corner of the room. My kitchen is an apple theme, so I fill mine with wooden apples I got at a thrift store. You can really use your imagination with this. How about rolling your extra dish towels and then tying all together with a piece of twine. Place some old kitchen utensils, such as an egg beater, rolling pin, or old kitchen forks and spoons tied with a piece of homespun fabric.

Take a candle lamp and add your own shade. Stamp or stencil your own theme on it for a custom look! Whatever your theme is you can find a stamp or stencil for it out there. Tie a piece of homespun fabric you used for your curtains around the base of the lamp. Tying pieces of homespun around different items in your kitchen really speaks "primitive".

Sometimes you can buy some really old fabric at estate and yard sales. Also look at "barn sales". I've found some really old quilts at these.

Kitchen chairs and tables are really fun to look for. Yard sales and estate sales are the best places to find these. Sometimes you can even find old furniture on the side of the road.  The best part of this is it's "free"!  Chairs can be repainted to match your own colors or sometimes if they're really old I suggest just cleaning with a mild solution of soap and water and use "as is
".

Change cabinet and drawer hardware to bring back the old days. These can be bought at antique stores, estate sales or sometimes at yard sales. Look for old furniture someone is throwing out and you can sometimes find some really old hardware.

I also chose to remove the two doors below my kitchen sink and hang a curtain that matches my window curtain. All you need is one of those expandable curtain rods and "voila"!

The valances I explained earlier look really cute with half shutters underneath them. I like shutters in my kitchen because I think they make the room look very primitive.

I hope some of these ideas and tips will help you create your primitive kitchen! I will be updating periodically so check back soon!
