Simple Rag Rug

I just loved making this primitive rag rug!  Actually, it was going to be a rug but when I got part way through I decided to make it a mat for my living room table.

Here are the instructions for making this prim rug for just about nothing!

First, find old clothing, flannels, cottons, plaids, anything that is fabric will work.

Next, cut 1/2 - 1" strips about 3-4 feet long.

If you cut the strips too long it becomes very hard to braid because the strips get tangled with each other.

After all your strips are cut, separate 9 strips into 3 sections of 3.

Tie all the ends around a chair post or something where you can braid these comfortably.

When you get to the end just knot for now.

Make as many braided pieces as you can to get started.

Before starting to sew these together, hand or machine sew the ends so they lay flat.  Clip any excess fabric at the ends.

Start by winding the braided strip around in a circle, hand sewing together as you go.  It doesn't matter where you stitch as long as the braid is held together.

Keep going around joining each strip as you go.  Place a couple of stitches between the joining strips.

Make this prim rug as big as you'd like.

In no time you'll have a beautiful hand made primitive rag rug for your home!

ENJOY!
