Painted Porch Floor

This was a project I absolutely loved doing!

I was looking at my old porch floor and trying to decide what to do to it without it costing alot of money.

The floor was an old pine and really worn out in several places.

I didn't want to spend the money on having it all sanded down and refinished so I first decided to paint it a flat black with porch and deck paint.

I gave it three coats but you must remember to wait at least a couple of days to paint inbetween coats.  This paint takes a while to dry.

After the paint was dry I was trying to decide whether I wanted to place a rug in the middle of the floor to break up the black or paint something on it.

Since my room has many sunflowers on accent pieces I got the idea to take a small sunflower stencil I had and after finding the center of the floor I drew a large circle.

To do this, tie a string around a pencil and holding the string at the center point go all the way around with the pencil (the string is held taut) until you come back to the beginning.  You have a perfectly made circle.

Next, I took my stencil and placed the bottom of the stencil at any point on the circle line with the flower facing inward.

I traced the inside of the stencil with a pencil and then removed it so I would have this to follow when I painted it.

I measured 3" between each flower petal so it would come out somewhat even.

After this was done I used craft or stencil paint and using a small sponge brush or a Q-tip, I painted the flower using the colors I wanted.

Some of the black floor underneath actually came through a little but I thought it gave the flowers a nice effect.

After these were dried I painted a large sunflower head right in the middle and used my own imagination as to color choices.

You can do this any way you'd like.

Here are some pictures of the process.

Here is a pic of the completed project.  I have 3 coats of satin poly on this.  I just love it!
